And Document Variables tool

Shortcut Organizer adds a feature that Microsoft forgot in Word!

Word contains a built-in Organizer that allows you to view, rename, copy and move four of the features that are held in Word templates - styles, autotexts, toolbars and macros (in Word 97, 2000 and 2002, complete modules of macros). But templates contain other things besides - customisation of the built-in menu bar and toolbars, and keyboard assignments. Shortcut Organizer provides a user interface, similar to the built-in Organizer, that allows you to see and manipulate all the keyboard assignments held in a template.

This is an invaluable tool when you want to move your work setup between computers. It is also very helpful in helping you see if your keyboard assignments are in the right template, along with the macros, autotexts etc to which they refer. There's no point in having a keyboard shortcut which is not available when you want to use it, or which can be invoked accidentally when the macro which it calls up is not available.

Two versions are available for download:

Version 1.0: this is a MS Word 6/7 template which nevertheless imports flawlessly into later versions of Word.

Version 2.0: completely rewritten in VBA with new functionality, being able to resolve certain macro actions that could not be fully distinguished using WordBasic, and allowing multiple selections and block copying of shortcuts between templates. This version is bilingual (with translations supplied by Cindy Meister: it will show the dialog legends in German if the installed version of Word is a German language version).

Your chosen version of the template can be placed in your Winword\Startup directory, making a toolbar and menu items available, or you can simply use Word's built-in Organizer to move the macros to your Normal.Dot or any other template. Make sure, however, that you open the file first so that you can read the full description.

Document Variables

When Word 7 was released in 1995, it introduced Custom Document Properties with a simple user interface allowing users to create, change and delete document properties that were part of the document file could be used in macros and fields. It seemed to make Document Variables, which could only be set and accessed by macros, out-of-date and redundant. But many programmers prefer to use Document Variables for the very reason that they stay firmly hidden from users. The Shortcut Organizer files contain a macro "DocumentVariables" that provides a user friendly interface for developers.

Be sure, however, not to put a Document Variable field (available in Word 2000) into a header or footer: it causes Word to hang!
